The Ten Year Chandelier

A while ago I was looking in the local artist co-op and saw some beautiful funky chandeliers made from tea sets and assorted bling. Some were made with china and others were made with silver. I was completely enchanted by them and really wanted one. I thought the silver sets were the most elegant but they cost between $1500 to $2000.

For a chandelier, that’s not too bad considering it had crystal and all but I figured I could make one. I have always loved making lamps. So I began to study these lamps to see what they were made of. Then I saw a picture of a silver tea chandelier in the newspaper and added it to my Dream Book.

I’ve been picking up pieces for this lamp and stashing them away. It took a long time because I was looking for tarnished silver with a feeling of warmth.

My partner has been skeptical all these years. One month he’s ok with the concept and another month he isn’t. But deep down inside I think he was intrigued.

Last year I organized a dinner party but the dining room and chandelier weren’t finished yet. There was no drywall and we had to stuff the ceiling with blankets to make the space as cosy and warm as possible (it was February). With a friend’s help we made a couple of makeshift chandeliers… and added candles for extra ambiance!

This week I found the last pieces for the chandelier. When I explained to the cashier what they were for, she exclaimed that I was a talented person but I had to admit to her that I have the vision and my spouse has the talent.

Today Stephen has begun in earnest to solder the pieces together. It’s going to be beeootifull!

All finished!
